Healy Eames decides not to appeal train fine as she meets Iarnrod Eireann over customer communications

Iarnród Éireann will begin a review to improve customer communications across a range of issues including signage, information on tickets, and clarity about ticket purchasing.

The review will be carried out by the commercial and communications managers and is a result of a meeting this week between Fine Gael senator Fidelma Healy Eames and Iarnród Éireann CEO, Dick Fearn and chair Philip Gaffney.

The meeting was held in the light of the Senator’s experience where she was recently fined for not having a train ticket as she believed she would be able to buy one on board.

Speaking after the meeting, Sen Healy Eames has welcomed the commitment to carry out the review.

“Arising from my own train experience of last week, I have received a significant number of emails and letters from the public expressing dissatisfaction with the confusion surrounding ticket purchasing policies,” she said.

“Sometimes it is possible to purchase a ticket on board and sometimes it is not. This arrangement is confusing and clarity needs to be communicated to all train passengers so people are not unintentionally breaking the rules and finding themselves fined in the process.”

Senator Healy Eames decided in advance of the meeting not to appeal her fine so that the meeting could completely focus on the public interest.
