Let the people be the custodians of Connemara

Galway Advertiser, July 26, 2012.

Dear Editor,

Living in Connemara is a privilege not to be taken for granted. This is a land of great beauty and hardship, our fathers and ancestors before them for centuries worked, tamed and shaped this land that we enjoy today. We the native people of Connemara are the natural custodians of our inherited countryside and environment, not the faceless bureaucrats in Europe. Not our European lackeys in government. Not Ruairi Quinn who misled the people of Clifden. Not Phil Hogan who would bully and threaten us. Not the servile servant of Frau Merkal, Enda Kenny. Not the blow-in’s from An Taisce or other similar organisations who dare dictate to us where we can and cannot build our homes.

We the people of Connemara have been too complacent for far too long, we have deferred to fools who would lead us to believe that they know what is best for us and what have they achieved? Our limited amount of factories closed down during the so called boom years, our inshore fishing has all but collapsed, and our basic services have been cut back or non-existent. Our countryside has been destocked disrupting the natural balance of nature.

Immigration is the Government’s job creation initiative. Under this Government of the Fine Gael, Brussels and Labour Coalition, a total economic war has been declared upon us. We have become second class citizens in our Country. Apparently rural dwellers are no longer entitled to Garda protection; our children do not have a right to equal education, modern facilities and sufficient number of teachers in our schools. Basic medical services, mental health care and dental services are being centralised to the cities. Who could have possibly imagined that that there could be a person (our minister for health- Dr Reilly) who would be perceived as being more incompetent than Mary Harney.

This Government wants us to pay property tax on our homes when we are just about keeping a roof over our heads. They want us to pay water charges for a natural commodity, this is not a privilege this is a basic human right. They want us to pay, yet again, for our right to a septic tank. They threaten our natural, traditional right to cut turf.

We the people of Connemara live in an economically neglected region, an area of great disadvantage. We ask the people of Connemara to stand together and say loud and clear- we are not paying for the actions of traitors who have destroyed our country economically through greed and corruption.  And yet these traitors still walk free, paid enormous pensions while we are bullied and threatened by our bought, over-paid politicians.

Be informed, attend public meetings and fight back or else Connemara will become a wilderness again.
