New Garda HQ for city and region gets go-ahead

The go-ahead has been given for the construction of a new Garda Divisional Headquarters for Galway under the Government’s €2 billion stimulus package.

Plans for the new station had been suspended since 2010 due to budget cuts, but following the Government announcement this week, work will now be able to start next year.

The new station will be a state-of the art facility, built on a two acre site, which will include room for future expansion.

The news has been welcomed by Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish.

“It will be a significant step forward for policing in the west,” he said, “and will ensure An Garda Síochána can continue to provide a visible and efficient policing service around the city and the surrounding area.”
