The history of Eyre Square at city museum

The Galway City Museum will commemorate the 300th anniversary of Eyre Square this Saturday with a public lecture on the city’s main civic space.

Brendan McGowan of the Renmore History Society will give the talk at 12 noon. He will focus on the principal monuments and buildings of the area and show images of the Square dating back to the early 1900s when the statue of Lord Dunkellin stood on its north end.

The area of the square has been many things over the centuries, from a location for jousting tournaments to a gallows site. In 1712 Edward Eyre ‘gifted’ the Square to the people of the town.

The museum will also host a talk at 3pm that day on the life of Mary Creaven D’Arcy. The talk will be given by her grandson Gerald D’Arcy. Mary D’Arcy (1862 - 1947 ) spent much of her life in the coal mining village of Silverdale in north Staffordshire and had six children with Salthill stonemason, Redmond D’Arcy.

Both events are free of charge but booking is essential. For further information contact 091 - 532460 or email [email protected]
