The music of Hayden at St Augustine’s

THE MUSIC OF the great Austrian composer Joseph Hayden will be performed at a special concert in the Augustinian Church on Thursday May 31 at 8pm.

The programme opens with the spirited ‘Symphony 20’ played by an orchestra, featuring some of Galway’s best musicians, including Michael Dooley (bassoon ), Terry Cooke (timpani ), and Eamon Rabbitte (violin ).

The Tribal Chamber Choir, directed by Mark Keane, will perform a number of Haydn’s works on the night, including the Missa Brevis in F. For this piece there will be accompaniment by a sting trio and David Grealy on organ. The soprano soloists will be Sandra Murphy and Aoife Ní Chulain.

The ‘Missa Cellensis’, also known as the ‘St Cecilia Mass’, will be the main work of the evening. Considered to be one of the masterpieces of the classical era, it has many vibrant movements for choir with intricate fugal writing set beside lyrical arias and quartets for the soloists.

The soloists for this performance include Joan O’Malley (soprano ), Sarah-Ellen Murphy (alto ), Eoin Hynes (tenor ), and Brendan Collins (bass ).

Haydn’s epic anthem ‘Insanae Et Vanae Curae’ will also be performed.
