City museum seeks old maritime photos for exhibition

Galwegians who have any old photos relating to maritime pursuits and seafaring are being sought to help put together a new exhibition for the Galway City Museum.

Galway City heritage officer Jim Higgins and Galway City Museum are asking the public for their help in creating this maritime exhibition which will coincide with the Volvo Ocean Race.

The aim of the exhibition is to present personal images and stories of Galway city’s seafaring community through the years. The curators are keen to stress that they are not seeking professional photographs, but rather “hidden gems that may be lying in an old family album”.

Furthermore the curators are keen to stress that nobody will be asked to part with any of their photographs. Photographs can be brought to the museum and will be scanned and returned instantly. Alternatively, images can be emailed to [email protected]

The curators are seeking sailors mending nets, working on the boats, down by the pier, out in the currach, or just at rest. The museum is urging people to supply any images they can as soon as possible. For more information contact 091 - 532460.
