Galway author to launch debut short story collection in Town Hall

Galway author Mary Costello will launch her new collection of short stories The China Factory at The Town Hall Theatre this Saturday at 12 noon as part of the Cúirt festival.

The stories range from a schoolteacher recalling an incident that changed her life forever; a young gardener who has an unsettling encounter with a suburban housewife; a woman who embarks upon an affair; and a teenage girl strikes up an unlikely friendship with a lonely bachelor.

Leading English novelist David Mitchell, the author of number9dream, Cloud Atlas, and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, has described Mary’s work as showing “both an impressive command of language and a restraint in deploying that command” and he added she has “the eye of a nature poet”.

Mary is originally from Skehana near Menlough. She was educated at the Holy Rosary College in Mountbellew. She now works as a teacher in Dublin.

The China Factory is available from www.stingingfly.org and in bookshops, priced €12.99.
