From Platini to my mother, Chick surprised them all
Dear Editor,
There were many stories of Chick told as people queued last Thursday. Mine is second-hand and simple and involved a different Mary O’Connor, my late mother. She would have been in her sixties and carrying a load of shopping down town from the top of Dominick street. Chick, driving up-town, turned the van around, loaded up the shopping and dropped her out to Lower Salthill before continuing on with his work.
One year you are facing down the might of Juventus and Platini, another year you go out of your way when no one is looking to help an elderly lady. Maybe it’s that decency that many people have talked about that explains a little bit of the reason why Chick was a true Galway hero.
Yours,
Patrick O’Connor
