John’s parents Martin and Marguerite, brothers Manus and Pat, sisters Sadie, Carmel and Eithne, Sisters in Law, Brothers in Law, Nieces and Nephews, Uncles and Aunts, Grand-Aunts and extended family wish to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all who sympathized and supported us on John’s sad and untimely death. To everyone who telephoned or called to our homes, attended his wake, removal, funeral mass and burial, sent Mass cards, perpetual enrolments, floral tributes and letters of sympathy. To those who travelled from overseas and many parts of the country. To Canon Willie Cummins P.P. for his beautiful homily and celebration of Holy Mass, also Fr. Michael Connolly, Fr. Joe Kennedy (Swords), Fr. Pat Gilbert (Birr), Canon Peter Rabbitte, Fr. Barry Hogg and Fr. Sean Manning for concelebrating Mass, our most sincere thanks. To Mary O’Donnell, sacristan and parish secretary for her help, advice and friendship. To Michael Carrick for his beautiful singing. To John’s classmates in Templemore Garda College and N.U.I. Galway, friends and colleagues who attended in such large numbers and provided guards of honour.
Our gratitude to Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan, Assistant Commissioners Jack Nolan and Fintan Fanning, Chief Superintendents Michael O’Sulleabháin, Francis Clerkin and Mark Curran, Superintendents Marie Scahill and Ronan Galligan, Inspectors Colm Healy and Luke Lacey, Detective Inspector Mick Cryan, Sergeant Mick Byrne (Swords), Dermot O’Brien, Vice President of the Garda Representative Association and all other ranks in attendance. Special words of thanks to Superintendent Colm O’Sullivan, Sergeant Brian Howard and Garda Sandra Ryan of Ennistymon Garda Station and Garda Lucy Lowry of Mill Street Station for their help and care. Thanks also to the Coastguard Rescue Unit and Fr. Conor Cunningham who prayed for John and to local members of An Garda Siochana, Mill Street for traffic control on both days.
Thank you to the colour party, trumpeter and drummer who attended at the offertory of the Mass and at the graveside ceremony. Thanks to Canon Willie Cummins P.P. and Fr. Joe Kennedy for leading us in prayer at the graveside. Special thanks to John’s colleagues, members of Unit B, Swords Garda station who with great dignity and emotion, bore his coffin to his final resting place and performed the ceremonial folding of the National Flag. Thank you to Asst. Commissioner Fintan Fanning who presented the Flag along with John’s Garda cap and gloves to Marguerite. This very moving gesture will never be forgotten by us.
Special appreciation goes to our wonderful neighbours, relatives and friends for their thoughtfulness in bringing food and refreshments and for helping with preparations for John’s wake and removal to the Holy Family funeral parlour.
Our most sincere thanks to the ladies of Ballyban Beg women’s group for their outstanding work in providing catering for so many on both days and which was very much appreciated by all. Thanks also to St. James’ G.A.A. club for the use of the clubhouse and their input into helping organize both days.
Thanks to Galway County football board officers and committee members for their expressions of sympathy and minutes silence to John’s memory before the start of the U 21 County Final at Pearse Stadium.
Many thanks to Robert and his staff at Connelly’s Funeral Undertakers and also to the staff at the New Cemetery, Bohermore.
Thanks to Siobhan and all her very helpful staff at Flannerys Hotel for providing us with a lovely meal.
As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually we hope this acknowledgement will be accepted as a token of our sincere gratitude and appreciation. Mass will be offered for your intentions. John’s months mind Mass will be offered in the Church of the Holy Family, Mervue on Sunday, June 10th at 9.30 a.m.
