A weekend of Javanese music and dance

GALWAY WILL be treated to a night of song and dance from the Island of Java at a concert in the Town Hall Theatre on Saturday October 1 at 8pm.

Leading gamelan musicians and dancers from Ireland, Britain, and Indonesia will perform as will the Galway based group Gamelan na Gaillimhe. The music will range from traditional tunes to more modern Javan songs from the 1960s and 1970s.

The show will also see the launch of a collection of handcrafted bronze gamelan instruments commissioned by Soundscape, Brothers of Charity Services in Galway, and the official launch of the Soundscape Gamelan project.

The concert is part of a weekend of gamelan events which also music workshops led by Pete Smith. The public will be able to try out gamelan instruments. Participants do not need any previous experience and all ages are welcome.

Soundscape will also host a Javanese dance workshop on Saturday morning in the Galway Rowing Club led by professional Indonesian dancer Ni Made Pujawati.
