‘My strength stopped me from being raped,’ says city man

Damages claim against Justice Minister dismissed

A Galway city man had his €38,000 damages claim against the Justice Minister dismissed at the Circuit Civil Court on Tuesday.

Alan Towers (35 ) of Castlelawn Heights, Headford Road claimed he was attacked at Mountjoy prison training centre and that this had resulted in him becoming depressed.

Mr Towers told the judge that he was just 22 when he was lured into a cell by two prisoners in 1995.

He claimed his physical strength and fitness saved him from being raped by the two men.

Judge Matthews dismissed the case, however, stating that Towers has suffered a traumatic experience but had not proved his case that the prison service was negligent.
