Educationcuts march on Saturday

A major protest march and rally of parents, management and teachers to highlight what they term the “callous and savage” education cuts by the Government in last month’s Budget will take place on Saturday.

Huge crowds are expected to assemble at Eyre Square for the event which kicks off at 1.45pm and will proceed via Eglinton Street and the Salmon Weir Bridge to a final rally at the Cathedral.

There the protest will be addressed by the INTO president Declan Kellegher and representatives from The National Parents’ Council, management bodies and The Irish Primary Principals’ Network.

The groups say they will defend the rights of primary school pupils who will bear the brunt of these cuts with increased class numbers and no substitute cover for sick leave.

A spokesperson for the groups says Irish primary school children have the second highest pupil teacher ratio in Europe.
