Shane in seventh heaven to land Beeb golf gig
Former Galway Bay fm breakfast dj Shane O’Donoghue was always a handy golfer, even representing his province at inter-prov golf some years back before he reckoned that behind the mike was a safer bet that the crazy world of professional golf.
So, he must have been in seventh heaven last weekend when he popped up co-presenting the BBC’s covergae of the the British Open from Royal Birkdale, where his old sparring mate for junior golf Padraig Harrington emerged victorious.
He worked in RTE for several years where he tried his hand at presenting a variety of shows before finding his natural home in sport.
Alongside Gary Lineker, Shane did us all proud and was well placed to interview the Irish mammies and the wives who were all too easily charmed by his soft brogue.
Shane is also a handy singer, and recorded a very impressive version of the old David Gates and Bread song Goodbye Girl for charity a few years back. Well done, Shane. — Declan Varley
