United turns to volunteers to run club

Financial difficulties continue to beset Galway United as this week it announced cutting its paid administration staff.

According to the club, it had “strenuously” reviewed its budget proposals for 2011 with the result the paid adminstration role would stop.

Nick Leeson, who has been the club’s CEO has stepped down as a result, but according to the club, he will remain as a shareholder. He will also represent the club with the FAI.

Club chairman John McCormick says the club will now be run by volunteers, while all “stakeholders” in Galway United will be consulted on the new voluntary committee.

On the field Sean Connor continues his struggle to put together a squad for the season ahead, but it is expected he could benefit from a deal with Scottish side St Mirren.

According to recent reports St Mirren manager Danny Lennon could be sending six players on loan to Galway United.

St Mirren’s local newspaper, The Paisley Daily Express, claims midfielders Jamie McCluskey, Mark McLennan and Jamie McKernon, along with left-backs Peter Bradley and Ally Love, and defender Kyle Faulds could be sent to the Tribesmen.

It beleives the players will be on loan at Terryland Park until the end of the 2010/11 season in order to give them valuable first team experience and the chance to play more regularly.
