Greenfields put four past Yeats

Greenfields Hockey Club enjoyed a comfortable 4 - 0 win over Yeats County in their Connacht Senior League fixture in Sligo on Sunday.

The visitors, despite playing into the sun, dominated the game - most of which was played in the Yeats half. Despite creating several short corners, they failed to score as the Yeats ladies frustrated Greenfields with resolute defending, led by stalworth Deirdre Heaslip.

However it took just seven minutes into the second half for Greenfields to make their superiority count. Neasa McGettigan, in a solo effort, carried the ball from midfield and hit a brilliant stroke from the top of the circle which gave the Yeats’ goalkeeper Laura Doyle no chance. Greenfields followed up five minutes later with a second following the breakdown of a short corner move and a brilliant reverse shot from Aine Collins caught the Yeats’ defence wrong-footed.

Yeats enjoyed a purple spell when Lesley Ring forced a save from Sinead Collins, while Rachel Bourne was just wide of the post after a good move. But the narrow miss prompted Greenfields into further action, and a counterattacking move involving Catherine Moore, Alison Ryan and Neasa McGettigan, was finished off by Mary Healy, who got in behind the Yeats defender the find the net. Five minutes from the end Alma Whelan was on hand to tap in the rebound from a brilliant shot from Ailbhe Finnerty, which was saved by Laura Doyle.
