No facilities makes recycling hard for apartment dwellers, say Greens

The lack of recycling facilities for people living in apartments is a major contributor to the volume of waste generated in the city according to The Green Party’s Mairéad Ní Chróinín.

Ms Ní Chróinín is the Green candidate for Galway City Central and is concerned that most people living in apartments in the city centre do not receive the same level of waste services as those living in houses.

“Most apartment blocks in the city are managed by management companies,” she said, “and currently there is no onus on those companies to provide recycling facilities to dwellers in those apartments.”

Ms Ní Chróinín said many of those who rent or own apartments would be “very willing to recycle if that option was there” and that this would increase the amount of recycling generated in the city centre.

She said there is the option to buy recycling bags from the city council, but that this option is not publicised by the council.

“There is an awareness of the difficulty in City Hall,” she said, “but so far city officials have not taken steps to address the issue.
