Galway ladies pitted against reigning champs

Galway once again have been handed a tough ride in an All Ireland. This time it is the Galway ladies and they have been drawn to face the reigning champions Cork in their All Ireland quarter-final which takes place on August 24.

The current Munster champions are favourites to win as they chase a fourth All Ireland trophy on the trot, and they are regarded as the toughest of the possible quarter-final opponents. Connacht’s Sligo will face Monaghan, and reigning provincial champions Mayo meet Kerry, while Dublin square up to Tyrone.

However tough the challenge, Galway manager Jason Tanniane will have been boosted by Galway’s display against Laois when they finished eight points clear of the 2001 champions Laois to record a 2-15 to 0-10 win.

Substitute Lisa Coohill provided the pivotal score, bagging the half goal just three minutes after coming on, and that helped Galway into 1-4 to 0-5 lead at the break.

The second goal arrived eight minutes into the second half when Claire Hehir netted for the Tribeswomen, and it could well have been three majors but for the heroics of Laois keeper Bernie Deegan.

Galway scorers: L Coohill 1-2, C Hehir 1-1, G Joyce 0-2 (1f ), U Carroll 0-2 (1f ), A Clarke 0-2 (1f ), G Conneally 0-2, S Noone, S Burke, E Concannon & L Joyce 0-1 each.

Laois: M Kirwan 0-4 (2f ), E Fitzpatrick 0-2, T Lawlor 0-2f, M Kirwan & A O’Loughlin 0-1 each.
