The return of Beverly Martyn

SHE WAS a friend of Nick Drake, made two albums with her former husband, the late John Martyn, and has worked with Paul Simon - she is Beverly Martyn.

Beverly Martyn, one of the main names of the great English folk-rock boom of the late 1960s and early 1970s plays The Crane Bar, Sea Road, on Thursday October 14 at 9pm.

Beverly, born near Coventry in 1947, released her debut solo single in 1965. Her 1966 single ‘Happy New Year’, was recorded with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and the Rolling Stones’ Nicky Hopkins.

Later on she became friends with Pentangle guitarist Bert Jansch who taught her to play guitar. Donovan also penned a single for her, entitled ‘Museum’. In 1967 she met Paul Simon who asked her to contribute to ‘Faking It’ from the Simon & Garfunkel album, Bookends.

In 1969 she met, and later married, John Martyn. As a duo they issued two albums, Stormbringer! and The Road to Ruin - two of the most admired albums of the period. The couple divorced during the making of John’s Grace and Danger album in 1980.

She retired from music for a number of years before returning in 2001 with the album No Frills. In 2004 her song ‘Primrose Hill’ was sampled by Fat Boy Slim.

Beverley is currently recording a new album which will feature ‘Reckless Jane’, a song she wrote with Nick Drake. She is also writing her autobiography.
