Failure to renew paediatric urologist’s contract leaves children in the ‘lurch’

Some 330 children, outpatients at University Hospital Galway, have been left in the “lurch” because a paediatric urologist’s contract has not been renewed.

That’s according to Cllr Padraig Conneely, the chairperson of the HSE West’s regional health forum.

He says 33 children were to be seen by the hospital consultant on Friday last but their appointments were cancelled with two days notice by UHG.

“All child paediatric urology patients waiting for surgery or to be seen will now be transferred to Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin.

“This is a major setback for the children and their families that they will have to travel to Dublin which is a 400 mile round trip and may include an overnight stay for families.”
