Galway Culture Night takes place this week

Galway Culture Night 2010 takes place on Friday September 24 across the city and county with theatre, exhibitions, talks, music, readings, film, dance, and literary events from 5pm to 11pm.

All events are free admission and open to all ages. There will also be a ‘Culture Bus’ running free throughout the city for those who wish to soak up as much culture as they possibly can. So what is happening on the night?

An Taibhdhearc will present a reading of Breandán Ó hÉithir’s Lig Sinn i gCathú in Áras na nGael, Dominick Street, followed by an Irish traditional session; Blue Teapot Theatre will perform Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Silke’s, Munster Avenue.

There will be a dance show from Youth Ballet West in the Black Box Theatre; Galway Early Music will present renaissance dance music in the Red Earl’s Hall, Druid Lane; The Shannon Colleens will stage Songs of Joyce, a 50-minute musical extravaganza with songs drawn from the life and works of James Joyce in the Bank of Ireland Theatre, NUI Galway.

There will be an actors’ workshop in the Nuns Island Theatre and an opportunity to visit the Macnas Workshop in the Liosbán Retail Park.

Music fans have much to look forward to on Culture Night with the ConTempo Quartet in the Galway University Hospital Chapel; open rehearsals from St Patrick’s Brass Band in its Fairgreen bandroom; the Galway Baroque Singers, Cois Claddaigh, and the Galway Choral Association in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church; and Simon O’Dwyer playing ancient Irish instruments in the Zoology & Marine Biology Museum, NUIG.

Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop will host readings from Galway based authors who have published work over the past year; the Galway City Library will present an evening of Finnish poetry and music.

Druid Theatre will present a film screening of Riders to the Sea by JM Synge from the acclaimed DruidSynge production in 2005. The Eye Cinema will present a night of Irish short films in its The Arthouse Screen. There will also be films, exhibitions, and music performances in the Galway City Museum.

There will be a painting demonstration and art exhibition in the Art Essence gallery, Liosbán; an exhibition and workshops in the Artspace Studios, Liosbán (for more information contact 091 - 773046 or email [email protected] ).

There will also be exhibitions in Engage Art studios, Abbeygate Street; 126 gallery, Queen Street; the Galway Arts Centre, Dominick Street; The Kenny’s Gallery, Liosbán; Norman Villa Gallery, Salthill; Knee-jerk Artist Collective, Eyre Square; and Lorg Printmakers, Ballybane Industrial Estate.

Culture Night will also be taking place across Connemara. Puppet theatre Fíbín will hold an open rehearsals for the public to meet its puppets; Ríonach Ní Néill will give a dance workshop; there will be exhibitions at Breandán Ó Súilleabhán’s stiúdió in Carna, Stronach Gallery in Casla, An Ceardlann in an Spidéal.

Charlie Lennon’s recording studio, Stiúdió Cuain, also situated in the Ceardlann will be open to the public to witness and partake in live music recording sessions. There will also be a trad show in Áras Shorcha Uí Ghuairm where an exhibition by local artists will take place.

Club Scannán Sailearna at Seanscoil Sailearna, Indreabhán will show An tÉireannach Fáin (about the life of film maker Robert Flaherty ), while in Ros Muc, Pléaráca will show the enthralling film montage Ó Pheann an Phiarsaigh.

Scéal Mhuris, a celebration of author Muiris Ó Súilleabháin takes place in the Carraroe Library and there will be storytelling and song in Rath Cairn. Áras Éanna Arts Centre, Inis Óirr will host a play by Corr na Móna actors on the night.
