How poetry and Irish song interact

GALWAY ACADEMIC and musician Seán Crosson has published a new book entitled The Given Note - a major study on the relationship between poetry and Irish trad and song.

The book focuses on the work of poets Thomas Kinsella, Ciaran Carson, Seamus Heaney, Gearóid Mac Lochlainn, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, and Cathal Ó Searcaigh.

Dr Crosson, who has taught courses on poetry and music with the Centre for Irish Studies and the English Department in NUI Galway, says: “Music and poetry have an ancient relationship that continues to resonate in the work of contemporary Irish poets. The recent collaboration of Seamus Heaney with piper Liam O’Flynn is one of many examples of contemporary poets engaging with traditional music.”

UCC’s Prof Alan Titley said the book “makes an original contribution to the field of Irish studies. It is clearly well-written in a clean uncluttered style which carries the reader along.”

The Given Note: Traditional Music and Modern Irish Poetry (Cambridge Scholar’s Publishing ) is available from Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop.
