Southern Tenant Folk Union

One of the UK’s most influential folk/ bluegrass groups tour Ireland with release of third album, The New Farming Scene

SOON TO be released album The New Farming Scene from Edinburgh band Southern Tenant Folk Union creates the first true crossover of the modern folk tradition with its not-so-distantly related bluegrass sound.

Originally based in London and now resident in Edinburgh, Southern Tenant Folk Union will bring their blend of roots to Ireland with the release of the album here on Friday August 27th. The group will play an eight-date Irish tour starting on August 29th at the Dunmore East Bluegrass Festival, followed by concerts in Galway, Clonmel, Mayo, Dublin, Louth, Tyrone and Belfast.

This new album is a perfect mix of the hybrid Americana that comprises bluegrass with the non-American accented Scottish folk voice and comes as a breath of fresh air to those tired of the ghettoisation of these once independently experimental genres. Comprising one traditional lyric (19th century bothy ballad lyric ‘South Ythsie’ set to new music ) and 10 original tunes, it signals a new chapter in both the folk and alternative country musical styles.

Southern Tenant Folk Union have used this album to bring out the talent of the new members of the band, most of whom come from the Scottish folk music tradition, players such as Adam Bulley, whose vocals and mandolin combine the newgrass sound of Chris Thile with a darker and earthier Celtic undercurrent. New band members Jed Milroy on guitar and vocals and Ben Ivitsky on fiddle and vocals have proven to be worthy contributors.
