Spa and surf in magnificent Mayo
By Maria Daly
When you think of Westport the first thing that comes to mind usually is great pubs and lots of hen and stag parties. But there’s more to this town on the coast of Mayo than drinking, and at the Westport Plaza and Castlecourt resort they have created the perfect packages to make sure you get the most out your stay.
Without doubt Westport is one of the prettiest towns in the west, and with an abundance of beautiful beaches and plenty of activities on hand it is the perfect location for that long needed getaway.
The Westport Plaza and Castlecourt offers the ultimate in luxury accommodation, with quality food, exceptional service, and the perfect location just on the outskirts of the town. It is the perfect starting point for your trip to Westport.
There is no need to leave the resort during your stay if you wish, with its on-site leisure facilities and indulgent spa facilities. Spa Sula is the ultimate in luxury, with its thermal suites alone enough to help you unwind. Once you step through the doors of the spa you are taken away from the hustle and bustle of the lively town outside and immersed into a sanctuary of calm.
The thermal suites include everything you need to destress and unwind including exfoliating area, wet heat cabins, sauna, aroma grotto, steam room, and of course the outdoor Jacuzzi which is a must. There is also a wide range of treatments and relaxation rooms for you to pamper yourself in.
For those of you looking to get out into the fresh air and experience all that Westport and its surroundings have to offer, (other than Croagh Patrick!) when you’re taking a family break Westport House and Country Estate has plenty to keep both adults and children happy. The house is one of the most beautiful and historic homes in the country and is open from March to October. Killary Adventure Centre near Leenane has plenty of outdoor activities to offer.
For a real treat get in touch with Surf Mayo. Based in Louisburgh outside Westport, they offer surfing lessons for anyone looking to get to grips with the Atlantic waves. There are plenty of beaches to choose from, but Carrowniskey beach is by far the best. The instructors are helpful, encouraging, and very patient, just what you need as a beginner. Whether you’re looking to get a surf lesson, or just hire a surfboard and wetsuit and brave the elements yourself, Surf Mayo can cater for you.
Once you’ve had enough of the great outdoors return to the Plaza and Castlecourt for an evening of food and entertainment. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from including The Orchard and Restaurant Merlot which serve deliciously fresh food. And then on for a nightcap at the always lively Petie Joe’s or Plaza Bar.
