Man threatens gardai his uncle will sort them out

A 26-years-old man arrested for refusing to give his name and address after he was found walking in the middle of a busy road while drunk, threatened gardai his uncle would sort them out.

Peter Grant, a native of Donegal town, with a rental address at 4 Sandyvale Lawns, Headford Road, Galway, pleaded guilty at Galway District Court this week to refusing to give his name and address to Gardai at Newcastle Road, Galway, on July 8 last. He also pleaded guilty to being drunk and to breaching the peace on the same date.

Inspector Sean Glynn said Gardai found Grant walking down the middle of Newcastle Road at 4am and when they told him to get in on the footpath he told them to “f**k off”.

He refused to give his name and address when taken back to Galway Garda Station, and when charged with the offences, told Galway gardai, “Wait until my uncle finds out. You are all for it.”

Grant took the opportunity in court to apologise for his behaviour on the night.

In reply to Judge Mary Fahy, Grant said he worked in an engineering office in Galway. He said he wrote a letter of apology to the gardai the day after these offences occurred.

Judge Fahy convicted and fined him €300 for refusing to give his name and address and €300 for breaching the peace. She took the remaining charge into account and warned Grant to be careful the next time he went out socialising.
