Lucky Athenry punter wins over €100,000 on €2 bet

A lucky Galway punter is celebrating this week after winning more than €100,000 from a €2 bet when amazingly the seven horses he backed all romped home in first place.

Athenry man Gerry Quinton (41 ) became the toast of the town when he turned a €2.22 (Stg£2 ) bet into a €101,158 windfall last Sunday.

He is the first person in the country to pull off such a feat with the Tote Super 7 bet which experts say punters have a one-in-8.7 million chance of winning because of its intricate odds.

The chances of an individual winning the National Lottery is one-in-8.1 million.

According to reports, a thrilled Mr Quinton placed the bet at Ladbrokes bookmakers in Athenry shortly after 1pm on Sunday and it was here that he excitedly watched the last horse romp home and complete the mega win.

Mr Quinton’s first horse, 10/3 favourite Blue Spinnaker, won the 2pm in Doncaster, England, his second choice Deadly Encounter won at 5/1 odds in the 3pm race at the same track before his third choice, Federstar, won at 9/2 at Hexham in England. It was back to Doncaster for the 6/1 shot Kaldoun Kingdom in the 4.10pm race and his fifth winner, Treehouse, won the 4.25 at Hexham at 15/8. The excitment was really brewing when Holmwood Legend (5/2 ) won the 4.35 in Wincanton, England, and Paquerettza sealed the deal with the 15/8 favourite winning in Doncaster at 5.15pm.
