Galway’s St Patrick’s Day Festival starts on Saturday

St Patrick’s Day in Galway will not be a one day celebration of all things Irish, it will be a five-day celebration of music, art, theatre carnival and all that is great about Galway.

St Patrick’s Festival Galway begins this Saturday at the Spanish Arch with the opening of Jane Talbot’s art installation Away With The Birds. The piece is inspired by the skyscape around the Spanish Arch and will be on show throughout the festival.

Look out for two newly devised street performances from Macnas in the centre of town on Sunday and Monday.

In the Spanish Arch on Tuesday there will be the By The Light Of The Moon light, sound, and art exhibition. It is a collaboration by the St Patrick’s Festival, Black Light, Macnas, and Andy Smyth inspired by the Atlantic and the natural beauty of the area.

The St Patrick’s Day Parade begins at 12.30pm of Wednesday 17 on Dominick Street and will see a host of entries performing their interpretation of this year’s theme ‘Over the Moon’. Visiting groups this year include the Stirling and District Schools Pipe Band and traditional musicians and dancers from Galway’s twin town, Lorient.

Dog and String Theatre Company provide entertainment for families on Shop Street on St Patrick’s Day after the parade with The Billy Holiday. Later that evening in the Black Box Theatre the Timbertramps, Mad Uncle Harry, and DJ Kit Kola perform at the festival wrap party Under The Moon, a carnival extravaganza of music, visuals, and dance.

Keep an eye out for some surprise performances that will happen on the streets throughout the festival. For more information see www.stpatricksgalway.com
