The Irishmen who fought for Mexico

In Mexico City there stands a monument to a group of Irish and German soldiers who fought and died in the brutal Mexican-American war of 1846-1848.

These soldiers, known as the San Patricios, and their Galway born commanding officer, John Riley, have passed into legend but the details of their story remain unknown to many.

Ian Kennelly, author of Courage and Conflict: Forgotten Stories of the Irish at War and The Paper Wall, will speak about the San Patricios, who are heroes to the Mexican people, in Galway City Museum tonight at 7.30pm.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
