Atlantic College’s response to adult learner needs

Market research conducted by Atlantic College when designing its part-time course programme shows that the needs of adult learners are changing rapidly. Learners now require short, sharp, skills-focused courses that are accredited by trusted organisations. These skills may then be used to immediate effect as employment currency.

Adult learners also need these courses delivered at times that suit them and not the providers. They also expect top-class facilities and affordable rates. Going the extra mile is also expected of course providers as learners are looking for a range of additional support services to give them an edge and enhance their employability.

Atlantic College is well placed to meet these market demands. With an established reputation as a top-class education provider since 1993, the college is offering 11 courses for adult learners starting this autumn. Three of these are in the field of childcare with each carrying FETAC approval and meeting the Government’s requirements for the new free pre-school year scheme.

The area of business and human resource management includes seven courses. Among these are some internationally recognised courses including ACCA accounting technician and diploma in financial management, and the CIPD certificate in personnel practice.

A highly innovative and sought after course is the certificate in criminalistics and forensic psychology. With a broad appeal, this course is of particular interest to members of An Garda Síochána.

While courses are competitively priced and there is a discount for the unwaged, the college has introduced a flexible payment option and perhaps, just as significantly for many adult learners, Atlantic is including a range of additional services in the cost of its course fees.

Exclusively for Atlantic College students, these services include individual careers coaching, computer workshops, and a series of workshops aimed at those returning to education after a break; writing skills, time management, and study skills.

Atlantic College has taken the lead by designing its programmes around these demands. The college has organised drop-in information sessions in Atlantic College (Fairgreen House top floor, off Eyre Square ) every Monday until September 28 from 5pm to 7pm. All are welcome.
