Enjoy a feast of free events on Galway Culture Night

Galway Culture Night takes place on Friday September 25 with a host of free musical, literary, and arts events taking place throughout the city.

On Monday, the deputy mayor councillor Terry O’Flaherty officially launched the Galway Culture Night Programme.

On Culture Night Art Essence in the Liosbán Retail Park will exhibit Samhlaigh, a visual art exhibition featuring the works of demonstrators as well as established Galway artist Joan Hogan, at 6pm.

Artspace, Galway’s longest-established artists’ collective, opens its studios to the public, with an exhibition showing how and where artists work. Artist Aideen Barry will also be running an animation workshop from 7pm to 8pm.

A night of readings by Galway authors published in the last year, chaired and organised by Michael O’Loughlin, will take place in Charlie Byrne’s, from 6pm. St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church will host concerts by Galway Early Music, the Galway Boy Singers, and Con Tempo from 6pm to 10pm.

Druid Theatre will offer Galwegians a chance to go behind the scenes of its production of Enda Walsh’s The Walworth Farce with a backstage tour at 6pm.

The artists at Engage Studios will host an exhibition of their work while The Forge Studios, New Road, will be exhibiting ceramics, metal sculpting, flute making, costume design, horseshoe throwing, and jewellery from 6pm.

From 5pm, the Galway Arts Centre will hold storytelling for children and adults, a dance workshop, traditional music with Mary Shannon, Joyce Redmond, and Fiachra McGowan, Rod Goodall reading Tony Harrison’s A Cold Coming, bluegrass with Mad Uncle Harry, and a concert with Cork’s Not Abel. The Galway Atlantaquaria will be free to the public from 6pm to 9pm, while the Galway City Museum will present Moments of Beauty - Gratitude for Water, an intercultural arts and eco-psychology dance event with Bernadette Divilly, from 6pm.

The Galway City Library will host city and county librarian Pat McMahon discussing the work of William Carlos Williams, Susan Millar Du Mars presents A River of Words, and Seattle born singer-songwriter Niceol Blue will perform. The event starts at 6pm.

The Kenny Gallery in Liosbán Retail Park will host an exhibition of watercolours by Phyllis Del Vecchio from 6pm while The Kiosk on the Prom in Salthill will feature an art installation by Margaret Nolan from 6pm.

From 6pm, Lorg Fine Art Printmakers, Ballybane Enterprise Centre, will host a series of artist talks and print demonstrations and Catherine Kelly and Gill Christy will screen their Lorg Short Film Project.

Mise Art Space and Design Gallery in Barna will be open from 6pm to 8pm, and as well as artworks there will also be performances from trad musician Mary Staunton and sean-nós dancer Emma O’Sullivan.

Macnas will open the doors in its workshops in Fisheries Field for an evening of lantern making workshops. Admission is free although places are limited.

The Norman Villa Gallery will host an group exhibition featuring Brian Bourke, Sean Cotter, Philip Lindey, Jay Murphy, Tony O’Malley, Fr Micheál Noone, and many others from 6pm to 8pm.

The Arts Office in NUI Galway will present the Sammelsurium exhibition by Dagmar Drabent and Marina Wild in its Arts Millennium Building.

The Galway Arts Centre and Decadent Theatres will be presenting the play Country Music by Simon Stephens and directed by Andrew Flynn in the Nuns Island Theatre.

The 126 artist-led gallery on Queen Street will present Skip Roll Bump Scratch, a new body of work from artist Peter O’Kennedy, featuring video, photography, and mechanical sculpture, from 6pm to 9pm.

St Patrick’s Brass Band will open up its band room on Forster Street for a recital of popular, classical and jazz favourites from 8pm to 10pm. St Nicholas Parochial School will host a performance by the Galway Dance Co-op from 8.30pm to 10pm.

Galway University Hospital will host a concert for patients, visitors, and staff, featuring The Big Sing multi-cultural community choir and trad group Dusty Banjos, from 6pm to 8.30pm.

The Westside Resource Centre, Seamus Quirke Road, will host an exhibition by Westside Mens’ Club, from 6pm to 8pm. The White Room Gallery, Liosbán Retail Park, will host a group exhibition, opening at 6pm.

Between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, at the junction between Shop Street and High Street, Colours Street Theatre Company presents Stolen Apples, about how the apple, from Adam and Eve to the modern computer, has been a trademark of corruption.
