History in the making for Galway intermediate camogie

It’s a challenge Galway have never overcome. The county’s intermediate camogie players take centre stage on Saturday when they meet Cork in the All Ireland camogie final at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick, knowing they have the chance to write themselves into the history books.

To date the county has never won an intermediate All Ireland crown, and on Saturday (2pm ) they face a side that will be hoping to emulate the success of their seniors who retained this year’s All-Ireland title.

Galway advanced to this year’s final with a deserved 0 - 16 to 0 - 7 win over a disappointing Tipperary side. Although both sides were level at the break, Galway took control. Keeping their opponents scoreless for the entire second half, Galway went on to record another nine points to seal their place in this year’s final.

On that occasion both Martina Conroy and Tara Rutledge were to the fore, and the management team will be expecting both sharpshooters to lead the challenge on Saturday, along with the experienced Caroline Murray, Gemma Murray, and Cathy Bowes.

Unbeaten all season, Galway have advanced to the final without being hugely tested, while Cork’s only closely-fought fixture was against Tipperary, before prevailing by 2 - 0 to 2 - 0 winners. As a result it should prove an interesting final and a real chance for Galway to claim that illusive title and bring the McGath Cup to Galway for the first time.
