Take part in the Galway Cycling Campaign’s summer solstice cycle treasure hunt

The Galway Cycling Campaign is urging families to come out and join in the fun of its summer solstice cycle treasure hunt this Sunday.

This free event, part of National Bike Week/Seachtain na Rothaíochta, will give children and teenagers the opportunity to enjoy the scenic cycle ways in Galway city and give them a fun challenge in the process. Families can choose from two different routes.

The Explorer Course is aimed primarily at younger riders and their adult supervisors and will be traffic free. This route will set off from Dangan Sports Ground, follow the off-road track alongside the River Corrib, loop NUI, Galway and return to Dangan. Younger participants will collect cycle related trivia en route which will outline the benefits of cycling for the individual, the community and the planet.

The Adventurer Course will see participants follow the same route as the Explorer Course but instead of looping the university and returning to Dangan Sports Ground participants will continue through NUIG, leaving the grounds of the university along Eglinton Canal, Dominick Street, Claddagh Quay, South Park, Mutton Island causeway and loop back to Dangan Sports Ground.

Stewards will be on hand to man all the on road junctions but it is recommended that participants under the age of 18 are accompanied by an adult. Registration for the event is between 12 noon and 1pm at the NUIG sports pavilion in Dangan. Light refreshments will also be provided.

Admission is free. All participants are in with a chance of winning a new bicycle. All entrants will be entered into a prize draw where five bicycle vouchers of €250 will be up for grabs. Spot prizes can also be won on the day.

Volunteers are needed. For more information contact the Galway Cycling Campaign on 086 - 1611587/087 - 9935993. A brochure listing the full schedule of Galway events is available to download from www.bikeweek.ie
