GMIT textile students to showcase their work at major London show

Final year textile students at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology will travel to London next month to take part in a prestigious design show.

Eleven students on the Bachelor of Arts (Hons ) in Design in Textiles at the Cluain Mhuire campus will showcase their work at the “New Designers 2009” event which runs from July 9 to 12 in Islington, London.

The show launches thousands of design careers each year and is the leading showcase event for graduates, bringing together the finest of design students from colleges in the UK and Ireland.

The exhibition will feature a range of new collections in textiles, fashion and accessories, contemporary applied arts, ceramics and glass, jewellery and precious metalwork.

“As this is our first year, GMIT is extremely excited about the opportunity to be viewed on an international stage and hopes also to bring something original and fresh to the showcase,” explains Peter Conroy, lecturer, textiles department at GMIT. “The work this year ranges from intricate embroidery to bold and striking fabric prints to conceptual, textile fashion accessories.

“Our graduates are mature, highly creative individuals who maintain a broad view of the application of their ideas that encompass fashion, interiors, illustration and installation. The variety of work each year leads to a very diverse approach to the textile medium, creating a stimulating atmosphere to work within, pushing the boundaries beyond the standard.”

Emma Doyle, GMIT textile student says being exposed to the design industry at “New Designers 2009” straight out of college is an invaluable experience.

“It gives us a direct insight into our design field. We are exceptionally thrilled for this wonderful opportunity to showcase our year’s work and, as our first year exhibiting, we hope to bring something new to the show.”
