Polish man still sought in murder probe

Gardaí are this week continuing to search for a Polish man who they believe will be able to help with the investigation into the murder of a young Claregalway man in the city centre last week.

Kieran Cunningham (20 ) was stabbed repeatedly in an attack in Williamsgate Street in the early hours of Wednesday last and was rushed to UHG, where he died a short time later.

Mr Cunningham, who was from Slievefinn in Claregalway, will be buried in Cregg cemetery after 12 noon Mass today (Thursday ).

It is understood gardaí are anxious to speak to a Polish man whose image was released last week following Mr Cunningham’s murder. The man was seen with a young woman close to where the attack happened last week.

Gardaí arrested and questioned a young woman in relation to the incident and she was later released without charge. A house in Renmore was searched as part of the investigation into the stabbing, and gardaí are continuing to appeal for information on the man featured in CCTV footage close to the murder scene.

The man is described as in his mid 20s, approximately six feet tall, with tightly cut dark hair. He was wearing a blue top with a Sao Paulo 09 logo and stonewashed denim jeans. It is understood the man has not been seen in Galway since the attack and a national and international appeal has been launched to trace him.

Gardaí have appealed to members of Galway’s Polish community to help trace the man, and are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Galway Garda Station at (091 ) 538000.
