Funding for marine geophysical investigations at Inis Oírr pier

Funding of more than €28,000 has been granted towards marine geophysical investigations and a survey as part of the development of the new pier on Inis Oírr, the Aran Islands.

The funding, totalling €28,321, was approved by Minister for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Seán Kyne. The works will be carried out by Minerex Geophysics Ltd for the Galway County Council.

The works include seismic tests to determine rocks and the depth of sediments in the existing berths and the tracing of the underwater ESB cable for the island which will involve specialist equipment from the ESB. Minister Kyne said: “These works are a critical step in the design phase of the development of the pier at Inis Oírr.”
