Galway engineering talent honoured at prestigious awards

Galway engineering talent has been honoured at the annual Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards, with a number of projects and professionals from the county recognised for their exceptional contributions.

Siobhan Kennedy, a NUIG graduate and Rahoon native, received the prestigious ESB International Engineer of the Year Award which acknowledges the Irish engineering dispora for their work overseas. Ms Kennedy previously worked in Haiti to support reconstruction following an earthquake in 2010 and is currently a Recovery Advisor with the Housing Recovery and Reconstruction Platform in Nepal where she has supported coordination efforts since the 2015 earthquake which killed almost 9,000 people and destroyed more than 810,000 homes.

TOBIN Consulting Engineers and Architectural Conservation Professionals were awarded the Heritage and Conservation Award, sponsored by the Office of Public Works, for their work on Galway’s Aran Sweater Market. Completed in July 2018, the project marked an important social, cultural and economic development milestone for the famous Medieval Quarter of Galway city.

Ward and Burke Construction Ltd and the National University of Ireland, Galway were presented with the Technical Innovation of the Year Award, sponsored by NSAI, for their initiative, Design-Driven Innovation: Combined Sewer Interceptor Physical Model Test-Bed Project. The project demonstrated how a well-structured academic-industry partnership can enhance and accelerate much needed design-driven innovation in the water and wastewater engineering sector.

There was other recognition for Galway engineering talent and projects at the 2018 awards, with the M17/M18 Gort to Tuam Motorway PPP by Barry Transportation and Arup, runner-up in the flagship ‘Engineering Project of the Year’ category and the Ballygaddy Bridge - Bespoke Treatment of Karst Features by Barry Transportation, a runner-up in the Geoscience Ireland Award category, sponsored by Geoscience Ireland.
