Mike Cubbard to seek re-election in 2019 Locals

'I intend to continue the fight for those in need of housing, and ensure supports for those in need of affordable homes are in place'

Independent city councillor Mike Cubbard has formally announced he will be seeking re-election at the next Local Elections in May 2019, with the housing crisis being a key focus of his upcoming campaign.

Cllr Cubbard's declaration to defend the seat he first won in 2014 was widely expected. In that election, he ran in Galway City Central, topping the poll with 13.36 per cent of the vote. He will be standing in Galway City Central at the next local election, which takes place on May 24.

Outlining the issues on which he will be running, he identified housing a key area. "I intend to continue the fight for those in need of housing, to challenge the executive and Government on the pace of the delivery of new homes, and ensure supports for those in need of affordable homes are in place."

As a member of the Housing Strategic Policy group, Cllr Cubbard proposed a 12 week limit on rent arrears for the hundreds of cases delayed in assessment through no fault of the tenant. "This was passed by the housing committee and city council thus relieving unwanted pressures on many tenants," he said. "I have also lobbied on every occasion to ensure delivery of an affordable housing scheme. The rate of delivery of social and affordable housing is not acceptable."

Regarding his other priorities, Cllr Cubbard said he would continue to hold the Garda to account when required and to ensure there is "adequate community policing in place"; public transport improvements, the establishment of permanent park and ride facilities on the west of the city, and adequate bus shelters and bus stops where required; to work with residents groups to enhance their areas and ensure "vital repair works are carried out in a timely manner"; highlighting deficiencies that effect those marginalised in society, such as for people with a disability; tackling anti-social behaviour; and advocating awareness around mental health issues.
