Photographs and Faeries

An exhibition of cyanotypes by Regina O'Dea

PHOTOGRAPHS AND Faeries, an exhibition of cyanotypes exploring personal memories, by the Burren based artist Regina O'Dea, opens tomorrow at 7pm in The Courthouse in Kinvara.

Cyanotype is a photographic printing process which produces a cyan-blue print. It was mostly used by engineers up to the mid-20th century as a simple, low-cost, process to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints. The process uses ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide.

In O'Dea's exhibition, the cyanotypes are printed from digital negatives of photographs which the artist has taken over several years. She is interested in photographing old and decaying buildings, recording the "wonderful colours and textures" of the layers of paint, peeling wallpaper, rusted bed irons, found within abandoned households. The exhibition also includes a group of faery figures, whimsical "beings" fashioned from wire, clay, paint, fabric and found objects, each with its own particular qualities.

Photographs and Faeries is hosted by Kinvara Area Visual Arts. It runs until Sunday October 28. Gallery opening times are 11am to 5pm daily. See www.kava.ie
