‘People Need to Live Here’ posters to appear on vacant houses in city suburbs

Action seeks to draw attention to link between homelessness and accommodation crisis say People Before Profit

Posters bearing the words ‘People Need to Live Here’ appeared on vacant properties throughout Bohermore, Woodquay, the Docks, and the West End of the city, with more such posters to appear in the city suburbs this week.

The postering is being carried out by People Before Profit Galway, and Joe Loughnane, PBPG's local election candidate, said it was a way of "mapping houses that have been lying abandoned for years", and of illustrating the "direct link between the increasing number of people sleeping rough and these empty houses". He is also calling on the Galway City Council to use compulsory purchase orders to take such properties into public ownership so they can be used as an "immediate measure to tackle the housing crisis".

People Before Profit said it would also support any initiative to establish a 'Take Back The City' group in Galway
