Galway Women host Shels in FAI Cup

Galway will be on a revenge mission when they host Shelbourne in the Continental Tyres FAI Women's Senior Cup quarter-final in Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday (6pm ).

Just three weeks ago Galway went down 0-1 to Shels in the in the league, ensuring Billy Clery squad will be fired up for this their cup showdown.

The Galway women have hit some form recently, having defeated Lifford Ladies from Ennis in the previous round 8-0, and then playing out a scoreless draw against UCD Waves in Dublin last weekend.

Both sides were forced into early changes with Galway's Carlie Schecht and UCD's Erica Byrne limping off before the break. Although dominating territory and possession, and looking the more threatening, Galway were wasteful in front of goal and found it difficult to create too many clearcut chances.

Lynsey McKey, with Galway’s first chance, saw a shot from the edge of the box fly wide, and was unfortunate to lose control when played in by Emma Starr shortly afterward. McKey again went close moments before the break as she peeled away to the back post and met Aoife Thompson's cross, but she could not steer her header on target.

Galway resumed the second half as they ended the first with Aislinn Meaney intercepting a loose UCD pass, but she could not find the target with the resulting shot. Shots from Sadbh Doyle and Starr failed to trouble Erica Turner in the UCD goal.

However it was Waves who could have stolen it late on with their one clear chance when in injury time Leanne Payne, with just Tina Hughes to beat, could only nudge her shot at the keeper.

Converting chances will be essential if Galway are to see off Shelbourne on Saturday to advance to the cup semi-final.

Meanwhile Galway U17s are also at home this weekend when they host Donegal Women's League on Sunday at 2pm in Dangan. A win could be enough for to see them qualify for the semi-finals with two games to spare, depending on results elsewhere.

Galway WFC: Tina Hughes; Rachel Baynes, Chloe Singleton, Lucia Lobato, Carlie Schecht (Sarah Baynes 18 ); Tessa Mullins, Emma Starr, Sadbh Doyle; Aislinn Meaney (Elle Rose O'Flaherty 65 ), Lynsey McKey (Sinead Donovan 85 ), Aoife Thompson.
