For one hour every year, the Streets are yours — Get running

The Streets of Galway 8K, sponsored by the Galway Clinic is almost upon us and is now one of the biggest events in the city.

3,200 runners are expected to turn up on Saturday week August 11 and the amount of spaces left is disappearing each day. Registration cut off is midday on Wednesday next August 8, unless capacity is reached earlier which is expected, so be warned.

Register now on active.com to make sure of your place. The race number pick up at the Claddagh Hall from 2pm-8pm on Friday August 10 and 10am-4pm on Race Day Aug 11.

Please pick up your number as early as possible and remember parking is very limited, but enjoyment and fulfilment is unlimited. As usual, the race starts at GTI. Runners will be led to the start line by the distinguished Town Crier who lends a fine air to these big events.

Credit must go to Race Director Brian Bruton who works tirelessly guiding the troops to make sure no stone is left unturned and ensuring a great evening is had by all. Boston Scientic, Thermo King, Penn Engineering and HP are some of the many large employers who have teams entering, and sponsors Galway Clinic have a large number of employees running this year.

Claire Henry from the Galway Clinic said the sponsorship is the ideal fit for the Galway Clinic as it promotes a healthy and active lifestyle. For many the race is a personal event and that is why many run for charity with Cope, ACT for Meningitis, Madra, and Croi to name but a few always having a big presence of runners participating. This year a large number of Fit For Life members will run the race and have been training hard since January under the excellent guidance of Bernie Kelly and her team of dedicated leaders.

Bernie Kelly is responsible for many a person in Galway getting active and enjoying the thrills of running. For many in her group this will be their first race and many will go on to run more races, but the Streets is about them in so many ways.

To have courage or to take the plunge and run is something that can need persuading, encouragement, and reward. These are found aplenty at Fit For Life and it is a tribute to see these numbers remaining such levels each year.

While the Streets is for all there are some exciting names at the top of the field with more to be announced.

The organisers would love to hear your stories and your journey so please share using the #streetsofgalway or even a photo of you training or enjoying the day.

The route is breathtaking the views, the colour of the sky, the colour of the sea, the cheers. For many as you start and run over the Wolfe Tone Bridge, it is the closest you may come to running out on Croke Park. Enjoy it, breathe in that air and savour every second and every round of applause. High-five those along the route.
