Galway WFC make Limerick pay the penalty

Galway Women’s FC continued their successful run of late on Saturday evening in Eamonn Deacy Park when they defeated league newcomers Limerick FC 4-2.

Despite dominating the opening period in terms of territory and possession, the hosts went behind twice to long-range strikes from Marie Curtin and Sylvia Gee on 21 and 42 minutes respectively. Galway had levelled matters for a short time on 32 minutes when captain Méabh De Búrca converted from the penalty spot, but they trailed at the break.

Galway looked a different side in the second half as they tried to get back in the game. They had to wait till 69 minutes to grab the equaliser when an Aislinn Meaney cross found Lynsey McKey who headed home from eight yards out.

Galway continued to dominate and took the lead four minutes later. After Sadhbh Doyle was taken down in the box, De Búrca stepped up and once again made no mistake from the spot. The Galway women wrapped things up when a McKey shot was saved, but fell to Doyle who fired home.

Next up for Galway is the trip to Cork on Sunday when they take on Cork City in Bishopstown at 2pm. A victory for Galway would see Billy Clery’s side leapfrog Cork who currently lie fourth in the league.
