Weekend closure of beach toilets ‘mind boggling’ says O’Flaherty

A city councillor has slammed as “mind boggling” and “ridiculous”, the closure of toilets on a city beach at weekends — the time when they are most in demand.

Independent city councillor Terry O’Flaherty said it made no sense for public toilets on Ballyloughane Beach to be open during weekdays and left “locked up” at the weekends. As a result, she put forward a motion at Monday’s Galway City Council meeting calling for the opening of the toilets both in Ballyloughane and Silver Strand. It received unanimous support from her fellow councillors.

“It’s just mind boggling that the very time people are around, the toilets should be under lock and key,” she said. “Meanwhile, they are open from Monday to Friday, when children are at school and everyone is at work.”

Cllr O’Flaherty said she received numerous complaints from the public regarding this issue. She also pointed out that public toilets on Traught beach, near Kinvara, are open on Sundays.
