James Connolly to be commemorated in Galway

On May 12 1916, James Connolly, the socialist republican leader of the Easter Rising, was executed in Kilmainham Gaol, and the 102nd anniversary of his death will be marked in Galway.

In Left circles throughout Ireland, it is traditional to commemorate Connolly’s death on the Sunday directly after the date of his execution. As a result, the Galway commemoration, involving a wreath laying, will take place this Sunday, May 13, at 2pm at Liam Mellows statue in Eyre Square.

The event is organised by the Peadar O’Donnell Socialist Forum in conjunction with members of the Mandate trade union. Political commentator Eoin Ó Murchú will also give an oration focusing on the relevance of Connolly’s politics in Ireland today.
