A night of Irish trad at the Town Hall

Shaskeen and The Whingers present The Music and Songs our Fathers Loved - Rebirth Of A Nation

THE TURBULENT, inspirational, and ever-evolving journey of Irish music, will be performed by 16 traditional musicians, in the Town Hall Theatre tomorrow night.

Shaskeen and The Whingers will present The Music and Songs our Fathers Loved - Rebirth Of A Nation, tomorrow at 8pm. The show charts the development of Irish trad from the 18th century, through to the first decades of the 20th century, the development and growth of Irish broadcasting, to the internationally celebrated platform trad now occupies.

In the late 19th century, Irish trad was in danger of dying out, but Irish emigrants kept the music going, and with the arrival of the first 78rpm recordings from the US, James Morrison, Michael Coleman, and the Flanagan brothers became household names. Despite this, Irish music struggled to get regularly broadcast, until the emergence of Radio Éireann and the pioneering recording and archival work of the late, great, Ciarán MacMathuna, and the Walton’s programme with Leo Maguire, which ran from 1952 to 1981.

The concert will feature singers Sean Conway, Gráinne Ní Choitir, Patrick Costello, Frank Healy, and Feilim O Coileain. The musicians include Tom Cussen, Geraldine Cotter, Eamonn Cotter, Paul Cropera, Steve Flaherty, John Donnellan, Pat Broderick, Pat McDonagh, Jack Talty, and David Sanders.

Tickets are available from the Town Hall (091 - 569777, www.tht.ie ).
