Top tips for plumbing in summer

The weather has been pretty dreadful since 2018 began with snow, rain, floods, and of course, the freezing temperatures.

With the elements being so rough and tough, our heating systems have been working overtime to keep us nice and toasty when we settle down on the sofa after a long day's work. However, due to the excess usage, it is important to be vigilant for leaks and clogs.

Summer is a prime time to carry out all of those plumbing checks that we have been putting off all winter and most of spring 2018. By checking the bathroom, kitchen, and other appliances around the house, plumbing problems can be prevented from arising and ruining the sunny days to come.

Here at the advertiser.ie we provide some top tips to keep your plumbing working smoothly until we reach (hopefully ) the gentler climes of spring and summer.

1 Clear out debris from gutters

With Galway experiencing so much rainfall this summer and if you have not had the chance to remove autumn leaves or broken winter tree branches from drains and gutters, there is a possibility they could be clogged. Blocked drains and gutters can lead to water damage, leaks, and mould growth.

2 Check the toilet for leaks and ineffective flushing

A cheap way to check for leaks in the toilet is putting a few drops of food colouring in the toilet tank. If colour appears in the toilet bowl within half an hour then there is a leakage problem and it is time to call a plumber. Remedy the problem as soon as you become aware as leaving it may only cause the leak to worsen.

3 Take note of any leaky taps and shower heads

Drip, drip, drip - one of the most annoying sounds one can hear in a house is the sound of a leaky shower head. It may only be a few drops but think over the course of a day how much water is being wasted. Getting minor fixes like this done in spring time is a great way to help protect the environment and stop that infuriating noise.

4 Repair heating appliances

Boilers and radiators will no doubt have been working hard over the winter, and with the dreadful weather extending to early May, putting in extra shifts. All this overtime work may lead to ill functioning and leaks. With summer around the corner, the heating may not be at the top of the to do list but remember summer will come and go in a flash and it will be back to the misery of cold and rain. Like a leaky shower head or toilet, tackle the problem as soon as you notice it.
