Waterford influence over hurlers remains

CARLOW FIRST, December 04, 2008

The announcement regarding the appointment of Jim Greene’s successor as manager of the county senior hurlers was made at last week’s county board meeting, and quite interesting it was. Trainer of Oulart The Ballagh for the last two seasons, Kevin Ryan is to be the new man in charge. Speaking to county chairman Pat Deering in the lead up to the appointment, he assured me that a very highly regarded candidate had expressed interest in the job. This is in no small way due to the fact that the profile of Carlow hurling has risen consistently over the last few years with the performances of some very talented minor teams and the senior squad’s Christy Ring success this year.

Now the name Kevin Ryan is not one many people would have heard of on the national stage. However he has gained a lot of experience over the years at both club and, more importantly, inter county level. He spent three years as a selector with his native county Waterford when they were managed by Justin McCarthy. McCarthy is regarded as one of the top coaches in the country and he brought Waterford to a level they hadn't reached in decades. Ryan would have learned a lot working with Justin and put it to very good use when he went into management himself. With Oulart he won last year's Wexford championship. They were favourites again this year but were beaten in the final.

Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach 26 Choláiste Lorcáin 31

The U16 girl’s basketball team from the Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach suffered a heartbreaking five-point defeat in the dying moments of their semi-final against the Midlands Schools Basketball League in a thrilling match at the weekend.

The first quarter was dominated by the experienced Kildare team with top scorer Danielle Doyle reeling off scores, they were sharper around the net and while the Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach girls were getting to the basket time and time again the ball just stayed out leaving the Kildare side 9/2 ahead.

Local talent shine on national stage

Shaun Hennessy was Carlow’s top finisher at the Irish Junior Open held in Galway for the first time last weekend. More than 130 players from England, Norway, Sweden, and Canada all took part in an entertaining and well run event.

Hennessy finished fourth in a highly competitive U13 section. Ryan Luther finished his weekend with a great win over his Norwegian opponent 3/1 to finish 11th. In the plate section Marc Dalton played his first big event and finished third and is certainly a new player with great potential.
