Kilkenny hosts green parade and twilight event

Kilkenny’s St Patrick’s Day parade will be taking centre stage this week as the city goes green - in every sense of the word for the big green themed party on Wednesday, March 17.

Kilkenny’s Green Party Mayor Malcolm Noonan has some influential input into this year’s city parade and the environment is the prime focus for participants in the 2010 event.

It is heartbreaking to wake up in the morning and the first story you hear on the news is yet another case of child neglect.

We have dealt with several horrendous cases of child abuse by abusive parents and guardians in the past and the shortcomings of the authorities in failing to acknowledge these abuses earlier or even on time to save lives in too many cases.

In a time when the ongoing economic crisis and the country’s collective financial woes seem to dominate the headlines and our concerns, it’s a little too easy to get lost in the bigger picture and lose focus on the smaller, everyday issues.

If that sentiment initially seems a little bit askew, bear with me. This week I had the pleasure of paying a visit to the Happe House (ie happy) in Hebron Park. The Happe House is an aptly named community centre run by two ladies, Gladys Bowles and Teresa Heary, on a completely voluntary basis.
