Talking road safety with our youngest pupils

Westmeath County Library Service in conjunction with the Westmeath County Council Road Safety Officer challenged national school pupils to design a poster based on Road Safety. Hundreds of entries poured in, making it a challenging decision for the judges.

When looking at the entries from the four to seven year old age group, topics ranged from Be Safe Be Seen to Hands off mobiles when driving. However, entries also showed awareness of issues such as tiredness when driving, sharing the road, speeding and safe crossing of roads.

The winners of this category included: Aayla Gleeson, Aine Tubritt, Christian Dolan, Emily Ni Greachain, Faye O’Brien, Hannah Gavin, Jamie Duke, Jared Mulvey, Mollymay Jessup, Rosie Rami and Zoe Garry.

They received their prizes from Cllr John Shaw, Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council at a special Road Safety Prizegiving on Wednesday December 20. In his welcome speech, the Cathaoirleach paid tribute to the work being done by the teachers and parents to make children aware of safety on the road.

The winning entries are currently on display in the Atrium of Westmeath County Council or can be viewed on the Westmeath County Library facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/WestmeathLibrary/
