National Heritage week continues at Athlone Castle

Athlone Castle Visitor Centre is encouraging members of the public to support the remainder of the programmed celebrations for Heritage Week 2017 which runs until Sunday, August 27. This year’s theme; ‘It’s in our Nature’ is reflected in the various events in the programme, aimed at all ages and interests.

A Walk the Walls tour will guide visitors around the external features of the castle where they will learn about the defensive development of the castle throughout the centuries. The tour will be delivered by castle volunteer and retired Army veteran, Henry Brady on Friday, August 25 at 11am. Guided tours of the visitor centre and museum will also take place on Saturday, August 26 at 1pm.

Professional storyteller Aideen McBride will be on site narrating her mystical tales in a storytelling session for all the family on Thursday, August 24. Midlands Astronomy Club will be back at Athlone Castle for a lecture and a twilight tour of the night sky from 8pm on Friday, August 25 with their huge telescopes set up in the castle courtyard to get the best possible views. This event is weather dependent but you are also advised to dress up snugly for the cooler night air.

Athlone’s Making Space Artist Collective and award-winning Poetry In The Park invite you to an afternoon of poetry prose and music on Sunday, August 27 at 2pm in the castle courtyard.

Poets and writers such as Caroline Coyle, Amy Barry, Jason Gill, Mia Samovich, Ursula Ledwith, Philomena Barry, Brian McLoughlin and Eugene Mc Givern will be reading from their own work.
