Patterned tiles are now all the rage

Eminently practical and stunningly decorative, patterned tiles are surging in popularity at the moment, according to Aisling O’Reilly of Dublin-based retailers, Tile Merchant.

“Patterned tiles give you the opportunity to create something amazing, you can reveal your personality through your floor, alcove or feature wall,” said Aisling.

“What is even more surprising is that Irish people, who are normally quite design-conservative, are now willing to go for it and strike out with really unusual designs and tiling combinations.

“Those looking for inspiration will discover that punchy, patterned tiles are not just perfect for hallways, bathrooms, and boot rooms. They can be put to work all around the house. A mixture of colour and pattern works beautifully to warm up a kitchen while splashes of zingy colour can add instant character to smaller rooms and spaces.

“Tile patterned floors and walls look bold and eye-catching while colourful tiling displays work wonders for wall treatments. Fire surrounds, alcoves, and splashbacks can also benefit from dashes of decorative tiling. Patterned tiles are not just attractive, they are also hardwearing and super practical.”

Design expert Aisling is well placed to observe the trend as from their 8,000 square foot retail showroom in Dublin’s Ballymount, Tile Merchant supply much of the tile trade in Ireland, as well as floor and wall coverings and bathrooms to some of the country’s largest new developments.

“All our patterned tiles are porcelain and unlike encaustic, or cement-based tiles which are porous and difficult to keep clean, they require zero maintenance,” said Aisling.

“They won’t stain, they don’t crack, they won’t fade and they are all anti-slip tiles which can be used either indoors or outdoors.”

True to their name Tile Merchant are home to an extraordinarily large selection of tiles with over 900 different tile ranges to choose from.
